Marjorie J. Kostelnik, Ph.D.
Marjorie Kostelnik began her career in early childhood education as a Head Start teacher and has been working with children, teachers, families and community programs ever since. Over the years she has been an early childhood program director, a teacher educator, a researcher, and a T.E.A.C.H. advocate. She has consulted with early childhood programs in 100+ communities in the United States and around the world, developing curriculum, enhancing children’s school readiness, and working with teachers and administrators to develop positive child guidance strategies.
Marjorie earned her bachelor’s degree in child development from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree and doctorate in human development and family studies from Penn State. She was at Michigan State University for 22 years, as a faculty member, Program Supervisor of the Child Development Laboratories (a multi-cultural early learning program for infants – 5-year-olds) and then, chair of the Department of Family and Child Ecology. Marjorie came to the University of Nebraska in 2000 as dean of the College of Human Resources and Family Sciences. In 2003, that college combined with Teachers College to become one of the first Colleges of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) in the country. Marjorie served as dean of the ‘new college’ for 14 years. Today CEHS has grown from 2,500 students to over 4,000 and has tripled its research funding and publication record since that first year. During her tenure as dean, Marjorie supported the development of early childhood education programs for college students and children on campus, throughout Nebraska and internationally.
Marjorie is currently Senior Associate to the President of the University of Nebraska. Her job is to lead the implementation of university-wide efforts to find significant cost savings while simultaneously preserving academic quality and keeping tuition low. In addition, she remains an active early childhood advocate. Locally, she is co-director of the Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Commission, chair of the Educare Lincoln Early Childhood Center Board (serving low-income infants, toddlers, preschoolers and families), chair of the Dimensions Foundation Board (promoting early childhood nature education), and co-leader of the Lincoln Prosper Early Childhood Initiative (devoted to providing high quality early childhood programs to every child in the Lincoln community).
Marjorie is the co-author of 20 books in early education, 58 scholarly articles, and is a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Early Childhood Research and Practice as well as the Asia-Pacific Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education. She is a former vice president of NAEYC and recently finished serving on the National Academies of Science Institute of Medicine Committee to Study the Science of Children Birth to Age 8.

Historic Haymarket District
8th Street and P Street Lincoln, NE
Great restaurants, unique shopping and fun nightspots located among restored turn-of-the-century warehouses make this area sizzle with activity. Antique shops, art galleries, Pinnacle Bank Arena and the first microbrewery in Nebraska draw visitors day and night. The Historic Haymarket name comes from the original market square of 1867 where wagons, camping equipment and hay were bought and sold. In 1874 the city shifted the area a few blocks west and north and renamed it “Haymarket.” The spirit of the 1800’s flows into Iron Horse Park located on the north side of the historic Burlington Northern Railroad depot. A three-dimensional brick mural, “Iron Horse Legacy,” shows old locomotive Number 710 pulling the first train into Lincoln in 1870 on July 4th. A restored CB&Q steam engine and 1890s water tower fountain are a must see.
