A Virtual Trip Around the World with Educare Lincoln

This fall, faced with in-person gathering restrictions, Educare Lincoln took their annual multicultural fair virtual! In past years, the popular event for children and families was held in person and filled with activities and food representative of the many different countries of origin represented within the Educare Lincoln community. They kicked the week off with virtual passports and a map and schedule of the countries to be highlighted. A mix of email blasts and Facebook posts coordinated with in-person classroom activities that featured 2-3 countries per day. Youtube videos submitted by the families were posted each day and provided education on traditions, food, music and more. Larissa Moguel, family engagement specialist and the coordinator of the fair, shared the importance of exposing children 0-5 to other cultures, languages, activities and music of their peers, families and staff that surround them during the day. At the end of the week, the classroom with the most activities and engagement was awarded an atlas to keep in their room. Families provided positive feedback to the week’s virtual event during pick-up and drop-off and are proud to see flags hung in the entry of the school that represent the countries of origin for all families and staff at Educare Lincoln, one of the most diverse schools in the Network. Larissa shared that this experience was a great way to integrate an activity at home with what was happening inside the school during a time when families are not able to be in the classroom.
